# Sandboarding for Beginners in Cape Town

Your first run begins at the top of a white dune outside Cape Town. You do not need to arrive knowing how to ride: an instructor gives a safety briefing and helps you get started. Choose a stand-up sandboard if you want to find your balance on your feet, or sit on a bumboard and enjoy the slide.

## Find your first ride

Standing brings the fun of finding your balance as the slope begins to move beneath you. A bumboard gives you a seated way down, closer to the sand. Both put you on the dunes. Pick the one that feels inviting, listen to the instructor and take your first run at your own pace. If you are wondering how difficult that first attempt feels, follow the [step-by-step complete beginner guide](/is-sandboarding-hard-for-a-complete-beginner-a-step-by-step-guide/).

## The view on the way back up

A run can be over before you are ready for it. Then you walk back up through loose sand, with time to watch other riders and choose your next line. The climb takes effort, even if you are riding seated, so pause when you need to and enjoy the open view.

The shared session lasts 90 minutes. How many rides you fit in depends on your pace, including the walks uphill.

## Before you step onto the sand

Wear clothes you can move in and bring sunglasses and sunscreen. Arrive 30 minutes early with your original valid passport or South African ID for the reserve form. The **R96 permit per person** is paid on arrival, separately from your ticket. Our [price guide](/sandboarding-cape-town-prices/) and [what-to-wear guide](/what-to-wear-sandboarding-cape-town/) have the details.

## Ready to give it a go?

This is an active outing, with walking and climbing through sand between rides. It is unsuitable for wheelchair users or people with back problems. If that sounds manageable, the instructor and choice of boards make it a welcoming first try.

Choose a date and picture yourself at the top of the dune. The first run starts there.
